Supremo has engaged you to help make a suggestion related to quality issues they have experienced from a new product project. They have a list of quality related costs and they would like you to start by assigning them a classification. Based on your experience with PMBOK, you know that the cost of quality can be assigned to prevention, appraisal, internal failure and external failure costs. Start by taking the list of items below and assign each to one of the cost of quality classifications (prevention, appraisal, internal failure or external failure). Sum the total amount of money spent in ‘cost of nonconformance’ versus ‘cost of conformance.’
1. Due to processing issues, the production line has had to dispose of $120,000 of improperly manufactured food.
2. Because of a printing issue on the containers, food needed to be “repacked” by an outside agency at a cost of $20,000 of overtime.
3. Due to the printing issue above, the containers needed to be destroyed, costing $7,500
4. To remedy several of the issues, an outside consulting company was hired to provide standard operating procedures for food technicians on the production line. This cost $10,000.
5. A consulting company was hired for $35,000 to optimize equipment to reduce the scrap rate.
6. An intern was hired for $3,500 to review each batch of product to ensure that the boxes used for packing have the correct printing.
After you have classified the costs, Supremo has asked you to provide a suggestion of what tools and techniques could be used for several lingering quality issues caused by the recent product launch. Answer the following questions with complete sentences in order to address the use of quality management tools applied to the Supremo case:
1. The production line that is experiencing problems produces a large quantity of food. Even a short amount of time outside of optimal operating conditions can result in substantial waste. What would be the best quality tool to use in order to ensure the line is working within established limits and why?
2. There appears to be a variety of issues that can result in quality costs for this particular food product for Supremo. As mentioned in the list of quality costs, defects are occurring in a variety of areas – materials, processing, and personnel. In order to identify the factors directly influencing the quality of the product, what would be the best quality tool and why?
3. One of the technicians has a theory that the ambient temperature of the facility is correlated to product quality. What quality tool could you use to test this theory and why?
4. Another technician believes that the relationships among several variables are complex and require multiple comparisons. She believes that humidity, ambient temperature, product quality, oven temperature, product shift, and gluten content in the flour have interrelated relationships. Understanding these relationships can potentially help the team improve quality. What quality tool would be the best to accomplish this goal and why?
