Slide 1 – Title slide: My Experience at an Alcoholics Anonymous Meeting

Slide 2 – Introduction and overview of AA:

AA describes itself as a fellowship of men and women sharing their experience, strength and hope to help each other recover from alcoholism. Meetings are the main service AA provides.
Slide 3 – The meeting setting:

I attended an open speaker meeting at a local church hall. About 25 people were present, mostly middle-aged and older adults. The atmosphere was welcoming.
Slide 4 – Meeting format:

The meeting started with the Serenity Prayer. Then a speaker told his story for about 20 minutes. After, others shared their experiences. The meeting ended with the Lord’s Prayer.
Slide 5 – My observations:

It was insightful hearing the speaker describe his battle with alcoholism. AA provides a supportive community. Members understand each other’s struggles.
Slide 6 – Needs of this population:

As alcoholism is a chronic disease, this group needs a consistent support system. Meetings offer coping strategies and accountability. Sobriety is an ongoing process.
Slide 7 – Understanding the AA experience:

By attending this meeting, I better understand what members go through. Speaking openly about their issues is cathartic. The group dynamic gives hope.
Slide 8 – Nursing skills needed:

Nurses should have strong counseling skills, understand addiction treatment, and know community resources to refer patients to AA.
Slide 9 – Interprofessional collaboration:

Nurses would collaborate with psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and clergy who assist patients dealing with alcoholism.
Slide 10 – My thoughts on specializing:

While challenging, this could be rewarding work. Witnessing those overcoming addiction would be inspiring. More education on treatment approaches would be vital.
