Select three television shows or two movies depicting gender, race and class. Write a study on the media’s impact of how race, class and gender are viewed in American society. Analyze the tv shows/movies based on gender, race and class. What family dynamic exists? How do the tv shows influence women? (self esteem, self image) Take notes while you are watching television shows and note your observations. How might these tv shows/movies impact the viewers/audience? In this study, we will analyze three television shows that address the themes of gender, race, and class: “Mad Men” (2007-2015), “black-ish” (2014-present), and “The Crown” (2016-present).
“Mad Men” is a television show set in the 1960s that centers around the world of advertising in New York City. The show depicts the social and cultural changes of the era, including the rise of second-wave feminism and the Civil Rights Movement. The show primarily focuses on the lives of the white, middle-class characters who work at the advertising agency, Sterling Cooper. The show’s depiction of gender is primarily through the female characters, who are often depicted as being objectified and undervalued in the workplace. The portrayal of race is limited, with the show mostly focusing on the white characters, and the few characters of color are often depicted in stereotypical roles. The show’s depiction of class is primarily through the affluent lifestyle of the main characters, who are depicted as living a lavish lifestyle, while the working-class characters are shown as struggling to make ends meet.
“black-ish” is a television show set in the present day that centers around an upper-middle-class African American family living in a predominantly white neighborhood. The show addresses issues of race, class, and gender through the perspectives of the various characters. The show’s depiction of gender is through the character of Bow, the mother, who is a successful doctor and also a traditional mother who tries to balance both worlds. The portrayal of race is through the lens of the main characters, who are black, and the show addresses the challenges and stereotypes that come with being a black family in a white society. The show’s depiction of class is through the lens of the main characters, who are depicted as being successful and financially stable, while also highlighting the struggles and challenges that come with being a black family in an affluent society.
“The Crown” is a television show set in the present day, depicting the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The show’s depiction of gender is through the character of Queen Elizabeth II, who is depicted as a strong and powerful leader, while also dealing with the challenges and expectations of being a woman in a male-dominated society. The portrayal of race is limited, with the show mostly focusing on the white characters and the few characters of color are often depicted in stereotypical roles. The show’s depiction of class is primarily through the lavish lifestyle of the royal family, who are depicted as living a life of luxury and privilege, while the working-class characters are shown as struggling to make ends meet.
