The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has developed a set of Essentials to guide the education of nurses at the baccalaureate and graduate levels. These Essentials serve as the foundation for nursing practice and education, and are designed to prepare nurses to provide safe, high-quality care to patients in a variety of settings.
In this paper, I will discuss each of the AACN Essentials and provide examples of how I met each essential during my nursing program. I will incorporate evidence from my previous Nursing Evolution assignments, as well as detailed examples from my didactic, skills lab, and clinical rotations.
Essential I: Liberal Education for Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice
The first essential focuses on the importance of a liberal education for baccalaureate nursing practice. This includes the development of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as a foundation in the arts, humanities, and sciences.
One example of how I met this essential during my nursing program was through my coursework in liberal arts subjects such as sociology, psychology, and philosophy. These courses helped me to develop my critical thinking skills and provided a broad understanding of the social, psychological, and ethical issues that are relevant to nursing practice.
In addition, I also participated in a number of interdisciplinary simulations and case studies that required me to apply my knowledge of the arts, humanities, and sciences to real-world nursing scenarios. For example, during one simulation, I had to use my knowledge of sociology and psychology to develop a care plan for a patient with substance abuse disorder. This helped me to see how my liberal education could be applied to nursing practice in a meaningful way.
