As an advanced practice nurse (APN), the primary care nurse practitioner (NP) plays a critical role in providing primary care services to patients. However, there are several different types of APN roles, each with their own unique responsibilities and scope of practice.
Similarities among APN roles include the advanced level of education and training required, as well as the ability to diagnose and treat patients independently. All APNs also collaborate with other healthcare providers to provide comprehensive care to patients.
The difference between primary care NPs and other APN roles is the focus of their practice. Primary care NPs focus on providing general healthcare services to patients, such as physical examinations, preventative care, and management of chronic conditions. Other APN roles, such as the acute care NP or the women’s health NP, may have a more specialized focus, such as providing care in the hospital setting or focusing on the healthcare needs of women.
Another difference is the scope of practice and level of autonomy. Primary care NPs typically have a broad scope of practice that includes diagnosing and treating common illnesses and injuries, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and prescribing medications.
