Environmental factors: Organizations must consider their impact on the environment and work to minimize their environmental footprint in order to be sustainable.
Social and cultural factors: The values and attitudes of an organization’s stakeholders, including employees, customers, and local communities, can impact its sustainability.
Legal and regulatory factors: Organizations must comply with laws and regulations that can affect their sustainability, such as environmental regulations and labor laws.
Technological factors: The availability and adoption of new technologies can impact an organization’s sustainability, both in terms of how it operates and the products and services it offers.
Competitive factors: The level of competition in an industry can impact an organization’s sustainability, as it must be able to compete effectively in order to survive.

Assessment Tasks 1

Task

Evaluate the reasons why organisations should consider introducing and enhancing more sustainable practices in Aotearoa/New Zealand and related barriers/constraints. Resources are provided on EITonline (Module 1-3), but you will also need to conduct your independent research to study the Aotearoa/NZ context.

Guidelines:

Briefly outline what organisational sustainability means (including its different dimensions)

Drivers: evaluate internal and external drivers for organisations to become more socially/culturally and environmentally sustainable in Aotearoa/NZ, including economic sustainability drivers.

Constraints: evaluate internal and external constraints that can make it difficult for organisations to introduce social/cultural and environmental sustainability initiatives in Aotearoa/NZ, including economic sustainability related constraints.

Task 2

Use two theories/theoretical lenses from a list of four (paradox theory, business case view, stakeholder theory, institutional theory) to further evaluate how the theories can help us understand why organisational sustainability initiatives take (or do not take) place. Resources are provided on EITonline (Module 1)

Guidelines:

Choose and familiarise yourself with two of the following: paradox theory, business case view, stakeholder theory, institutional theory

Discuss the key ideas of each theory as it relates to explaining sustainability initiatives

Evaluate whether and how each theory help us understand organisational sustainability action/non-action, including discussion about the drivers and constraints of sustainability action.
