The region is home to over 30 million people, with a population density of over 200 people per square kilometer. The majority of the population is dependent on fishing and agriculture for their livelihoods, and there is a growing demand for land for development and industrial activities.
Deforestation is a major threat to mangrove vegetation in the Niger Delta.
