If yours is a full practice state, discuss how your state adopted full practice authority (FPA). If your state is restricted, describe the restrictions to practice and the current political climate surrounding FPA (for example, is there any pending legislation to move to FPA? Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are licensed independent practitioners who have completed advanced education and clinical training beyond their initial nursing education. APRNs include nurse practitioners (NPs), clinical nurse specialists (CNSs), certified nurse-midwives (CNMs), and certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs).

The practice climate for APRNs varies widely by state. Some states have adopted full practice authority (FPA) for APRNs, which means that APRNs are allowed to diagnose, treat, and prescribe medications to patients without the supervision or delegation of a physician. Other states have more restricted practice laws, which may require APRNs to work under the supervision or collaboration of a physician or may place limits on their ability to diagnose, treat, or prescribe medications.
