Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction that does not involve the fusion of gametes or the exchange of genetic material. Instead, a single organism can produce offspring that are genetically identical to itself.
Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of gametes, which are specialized cells that carry half the genetic information of an organism. This process results in offspring that have a combination of genetic traits from both parents.
Mitosis is the process of cell division that results in the formation of two identical daughter cells from a single parent cell. Meiosis, on the other hand, is a type of cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes in a cell by half, resulting in the formation of four genetically unique daughter cells.
Diploid cells contain two sets of chromosomes, while haploid cells contain only one set. Gametes, such as sperm and eggs, are haploid cells.
Fertilization is the process by which a sperm and an egg combine to form a zygote. The zygote contains all the genetic information needed to form a new organism. Syngamy is the term used to describe the fusion of sperm and egg during fertilization.
The zygote then develops into a blastocyst, which is a ball of cells that implants itself in the lining of the uterus. Implantation is the process by which the blastocyst attaches itself to the uterus.
Gastrulation is the process by which the blastocyst develops into an embryo. The embryo then develops into a fetus, which is the stage of development that occurs after the major organ systems have formed.
According to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services (ERD) PART FOUR Introduction, the Catholic Church teaches that human life must be protected from the moment of conception. Therefore, according to the Catholic Church, human life begins at fertilization.
