THE FOUR FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT
1
CRITERIA FOR RESEARCH PAPER
For this research paper- select an organization (your work, school, or other organization to which
you have access) and describe the four managerial functions: planning, organizing,
leading, and controlling.
I selected my workplace Subway.
Introduction
– describe the purpose of the paper by identifying your organization and
clearly stating your thesis. This is the information that you will show or prove about
the organization. A thesis might include a statement such as ―The XYZ Corporation is
a well-managed organization that is prepared for profitability (or other measureable
form of success) in the future or, ―The XYZ Corporation exhibits several

management flaws that will limit profitability (or successful business operations) in
the future.
Note that your analysis section will provide support for this thesis (or
opinion) and your conclusion will describe how you proved your position. Size: About
one page total.
Background
– provide some historical perspective for the organization. You should
research and include references that provide this background information. Size:
About one page total.
Analysis
–discussion of each of the four managerial functions is included in this
section.
– Your description of
planning
should include how the business sets goals and
defines the actions necessary to carry out plans. A description of annual goal setting
or planning meetings may be included for this purpose.
-A discussion of
organizing
should include what type of tasks must be
accomplished (in broad terms) and who is assigned to perform and manage them.
In other words, what types of jobs does the business have and how are they
managed. Describe the type of organization by determining the number of levels
in the hierarchy and developing a simplified organizational chart.
-Your description of
leadership
in the organization should include management
styles, the manager’s knowledge of individual and group behavior, and ability to
motivate and communicate. Limit this discussion to one or two specific managers
in the organization and briefly describe their leadership styles while leading the
organization.
– In discussing the
controlling
function, include the methods for monitoring the
performance of the organization plus techniques for identifying and correcting
deviations between planned and actual results. Specifically, discuss methods for
performance reviews and the budgeting process.
Conclusion –
Homework help – Discuss how your thesis was proved or demonstrated and provide the
lessons learned from the subject. Size: About one page.

THE FOUR FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT
2
INTRODUCTION
What is management?
Management is defined “as the process of administering and
coordinating resources effectively and efficiently in an effort to achieve the goals of the
organization” (Goodman, Fandt, Michlitsch & Lewis, 2007).
Everyone has or will deal with
management in one way or form.
You may be a customer requesting to speak to a manager; you
may be an employee working with a manager or even a manager working with other managers.
No matter how you have or will deal with management, “all good managers perform the [four
key] functions of the management process” (Heizer & Render, 2008).
The four key functions
involved in the management process are planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
These
four functions are highly contributed in all organizations.
In this research paper, I will describe
the four managerial as well as determine how each function relates to my own organization
which is Subway.
BACKGROUND
In 1965, 17 year old Fred DeLuca and Dr. Peter Buck, a family friend, started what we
now know today as Subway.
It all began after DeLuca graduated high school, he wanted to
purse “his dream of becoming a medical doctor,” but he did not have any money to pay for his
education (Subway, 2011).
So one day while in search of a way to pay for his education,
Dr.
Buck suggested that DeLuca “open a submarine sandwich shop” to raise money to pay for his
education (Subway, 2011).
DeLuca liked his suggestion and asked Dr. Buck to loan him a
$1,000 for the shop.
Dr. Buck loaned him a $1,000 and offered to become his partner.
With the
help of Dr. Buck,
DeLuca opened his first submarine sandwich shop called Pete’s Super
Submarines in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut (Subway, 2011).
According to Mahola (2011),
