Assignment: Application: Drawing Conclusions About Research Findings and Their Implications for Clinical Practice
As a current or future nursing researcher and professional, your ability to draw reasonable conclusions from research findings will determine the effectiveness of proposed solutions for clinical nursing practice. As you continue to develop your skill set to become a nursing leader, your exposure to a multitude of research designs, research findings, and evidence-based practice will likely inform how you will absorb this knowledge into meaningful clinical practice. Throughout this course and program, your exposure to different research questions, research study designs, and approaches to addressing serious issues in both nursing and health care confirms the ever-changing landscape in which you have elected to practice. While this is in its own right challenging, it also offers several opportunities to create new knowledge, improve upon current nursing practice, and exercise research skills
for positive patient outcomes.
For this assignment, review the research methods and findings of the Kollstedt, Fowler, and Weissman (2019) study. The purpose of this descriptive, exploratory design is to identify distractions impacting patient-centered care. You should draw your own conclusions in how they directly impact patient care.
In a 2 page, double-spaced paper, describe three conclusions you have drawn from the findings in this study, taking into consideration the limitations of the study. Next describe three implications for clinical practice.
Use the Week 6 Assignment template from this week’s resources.
Review the research methodologies as well as the conclusions that were found in the study that was carried out by Kollstedt, Fowler, and Weissman (2019). The identification of distractions that have an effect on patient-centered care is the goal of this descriptive and exploratory research approach. You are responsible for coming to your own findings regarding the direct impact they have on patient care.
In a paper that is two pages long and uses double spacing, explain the three inferences that you have taken from the findings of this investigation while taking into account the restrictions that were placed on the study. Next, give an explanation of three repercussions for the clinical setting.
Make use of the template for the Week 6 Assignment that may be found in this week’s materials.
Application: Drawing Conclusions About Research Findings and Their Implications for Clinical Practice
The purpose of the study is to examine the distractors that affect the nursing quality. Kollstedt et al. (2019) explores the perception of the nurses on the distractors that affect patient-centeresd care. The focus is examining if the nurses understand the depth of the problem and the intention to change. The paper uses qualitative methods of data collections including interviews to gather data about the perception of the nurses. The findings indicate that the perception of the nurses towards the distractors can affect the quality patient-centered care. Nurses who view the distractors as major sources of medical errors can take precautions. Nurses who fail to recognize distractors as contributors to the poor patient experience are likely to cause patient harm. The purpose of the paper is to examine the perception of the nurses on the distractors that affect patient-centered care and the quality of care.
Conclusions
The paper concludes that healthcare institutions should develop mechanisms to address the staffing problems. Staff shortage has been a prevalent issue in the healthcare environment. Healthcare institutions should increase the number of staff taking care of the rising number of patients. Addressing the shortage of staff will increase the efficiency in the delivery of care.
The second conclusion is that training for the healthcare workers is effective to eliminate negligence. Training among the staff is critical in developing the skills of all the staff. For instance, the starters will deliver care at the direct supervision of a qualified professional.
The third issue is that distractions undermine the attention of the healthcare workers and can lead to legal suits. Healthcare workers should demonstrate the damage a healthcare institution will suffer as a result of legal suits and heavy fines. The negative reputation will create more problems for the nursing sector in the future. For instance, healthcare workers complain about the lawsuits cost millions of dollars. The cost of payment for the lawsuits is likely to increase in the future.
Implications for Practice
The first implication is that hospitals will embrace training for their staff on the issues causing distractions. For instance, the policy issues will include barring the staff from using mobile phones at the place of work to reduce the chances of medical errors. Evidence-based knowledge is critical in enhancing the knowledge of the staff to eliminate the risk of distractions. Different workplaces experience diverse challenges that require regular training of the staff.
The implication for practice is changing the staffing dynamics in a healthcare institution. The healthcare institutions will strive to balance the ratio of workers and patients seeking care. Staffing policies are decisions of healthcare institutions. The government provide guidelines on how the individual institutions should handle the staffing challenges.
The third implication regular assessment of the places of work to determine the sources of distractions. The assessment will reduce the risk of distractions since it will eliminate the possible sources of distractions. Identifying the sources calls for authentic approach to delivery of care.
Conclusion
The paper shows that distractions can impact the quality of delivery of care. The researchers identify some common distractors including telephone ringing, computer issues, multitasking, and staffing problems. Nurses should avoid distractions to provide quality and safe care. Eliminating distractors reduces the risk of medical errors.
