NURS 6053: Interprofessional Organizational and System Leadership Sample Essay Paper
The nursing supervisor on the unit where I work is the last manager I worked with. Her style of leading is a mix of being in charge and letting people have their say. She lets the staff make decisions and solve problems on their own, but when she thinks it’s necessary, she steps in to keep things from getting out of hand. When the staff can’t make decisions on their own, she tends to give orders without acknowledging the staff; she will decide and control without the staff’s input. For example, when the charge nurse couldn’t assign a patient because another nurse wouldn’t take the assigned patient, she took over the task of assigning patients without the charge nurse’s help. Then, when I work with her, there are times when we both take the lead.

Types of Leadership
(Marquis & Huston, 2017) There are three types of leadership styles: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire. Authoritarian leaders are often found in large organizations; they make decisions without other people’s input, give orders, punish criticism, and have firm control over groups (Marquis & Huston, 2017). Democratic leaders make decisions together, have little control, and give people a lot of freedom (Marquis & Huston). Laissez-faire leaders let their people do what they want (Mind Tools, n.d). These leaders don’t give much or any direction, have no control, and make decisions all over the group (Marquis & Huston, 2017).

Depending on the situation and the team, all styles of leadership can be both bad and good. But I will lead in a way that is both authoritative and open to everyone. When decisions need to be made quickly and the staff’s input and agreement aren’t needed to get where you want to go, you should use an authoritative style of leadership (Mind Tools, n.d). This style works well for me when a team needs clear direction. On the other hand, I want to make decisions with my team and hear their ideas. Mind Tools (n.d.) says that people who work for democratic leaders tend to be happy at work and get a lot done. I would rather not use a style of leadership called “let it go.” I think that the lack of control in this style could be frustrating. Laissez-faire leaders don’t show leadership, don’t care about their members, and don’t make decisions about the group (Flynn, 2013).

What Style of Leadership Does
Effective leadership is a key part of getting an organization to do things that are productive and successful (Sfantou et al., 2017). Leadership styles, like democratic ones that get health care workers involved, have a long-term effect on the quality and care that patients get. Carol Wong says that democratic leadership is good for nurses and patients because it “focuses on the leader’s ability to build good relationships within the organization” (Marquis & Huston, 2017 p. 40). In contrast to what a democratic leader does, an authoritative leader will make sure that there are enough people and resources to give the best care and get the best results for patients. Overall, leaders who are both democratic and authoritative are often respected and can have a big impact on their team. Both can affect the quality of health care and how well patients do, making patients happier and lowering their risk of dying.

Week 11 discussion: Conflict Management Styles
In Week 10, you considered how ethical, moral, and legal dilemmas can provoke internal conflict when a nurse’s values are not in alignment with the apparent demands of a situation or with others’ values, as well as external conflict that can arise as these dynamics are played out. Of course, conflict can also emerge through seemingly simple issues of little consequence—little consequence, that is, except when they are not properly managed.

Nurse leaders need to be familiar with conflict management styles and the impact these styles can have on interpersonal dynamics, and, ultimately, patient care. For this Assignment help – Discussion, you evaluate a situation marked by conflict and consider how conflict management strategies could be applied to promote positive results.

To prepare:

Consider a conflict situation you witnessed or were engaged in within your practice setting. Then, proceed as follows:

Think about who was involved, how it was resolved (if it was), and how it might have been handled more effectively.

Identify the conflict management style(s) employed by various individuals, including ineffective responses or no response to the situation. NURS 6053 – Assignment help – Discussion Essay Papers – Interprofessional Organizational and Systems Leadership

Evaluate your personal response to this conflict.

What do your thoughts and actions in this and other conflict situations reveal about your typical approach to conflict?

By Day 3

Post a description of how you handled or avoided a conflict, as well as the results of your approach. Explain how would you respond to this conflict today and/or what steps you would take to improve your comfort level and skill for managing conflict in the future (including specific conflict management strategies you would use). Explain how conflict management relates to your effectiveness as a leader.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

By Day 6

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days using one or more of the following approaches:

Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, evidence or research.

Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.

Offer and support an alternative perspective using readings from the classroom or from your own research in the Walden Library.

Make a suggestion based on additional evidence drawn from readings or after synthesizing multiple postings.
