Chapter 6 Definitions
1. Custody; is the act of being legally responsible for prisoners.
2. Inmate classification; is the process of gathering and assessing information about every prisoner to establish the risk of the inmate and need for suitable treatment and confinement.
3. Consensus model; this is a prisoner management model where prison employees using their experience, establish factors responsible for risk.
4. Equity-based model; refers to a model where prisoners are managed based on factors that pertain to current offenses; past criminal history is not put into consideration.
5. Prediction model; this is a prison management model where prison employees forecast and regulate the behaviors of inmates based on information that can be verified.
6. Maximum security prison; this denotes to the type of prison that has the highest restriction levels on the movements and activities of inmates.
7. Radial design/Auburn prison; refers to a prison design that has a central building for correctional officers and individual cellblocks situating an array that creates the shape of spokes of a wheel or a fan
8. Telephone-pole design; this is a prison design that has the shape of a telephone pole with the central post acting as the corridor and the crossbars as the cell blocks.
9. Courtyard Design-refers to a prison design that has an open space that is surrounded by buildings.
10. Campus Design-this is a prison that is designed to look like a small college.

11. Medium security-this is a type of prison that has less restriction levels to inmates’ movements and activities compared to a maximum security prison.
12. Contract system-denotes to a system where prison labor is sold to a contractor (usually private companies).
13. Lease system-this is a system where convicts provide prison labor to private parties and work in mines or plantations.
14. State-use system; in this system, prisoners focus on producing materials exclusively for utilization in state institutions or its subdivisions and the materials are not for sale.
15. Penitentiary; this is a prison that houses inmates that have committed serious crimes.
