1. What is your main takeaway from “The Gap” video?
The Gap video by Ira Glass discusses the gaps that exist in creativity. The video provides some of the factors that should be considered when engaging in creative activities. Some of the main takeaways from the video that can be considered in include putting effort in the idea, which involves spending more time beyond the relatively ordinary work to deliver the idea to the world. The other take way from the video is that individual should understand the skill gap exists. Therefore, remaining oneself and putting the effort towards the idea is the way to bridge the skill gap. Another main takeaway from the video is doing a lot of work. Ira, mentions that when starting a creative career, one goes through a long period of having disappointment work, and the only way of bridging the disappointment is continuing doing a lot of work.
2. How might Ira Glass’ remarks about developing the craft of storytelling be applied to learning computer programming?
Ira remarks concerning developing the craft of storytelling is based on two main concepts; the anecdote and the moment of reflection. The two concepts can be applied in learning computer programming since programming evokes comparisons to storytelling. The application of the anecdote concept in learning computer programming involves the flow of events that follow each other, which is realistic in programming. The concept of the moment of reflection can be applied in learning computer programming as it involves reflecting and describing what algorithms designed are leading to.
3. One could argue that programming is a creative endeavor (e.g., “code is poetry”). Give me your best argument for or against this idea.
Programming can be considered a creative endeavor since it involves coming up with ways of solving problems and exploiting the imaginary minds and ideas just like painting and writing. The creative endeavor of programming comes in to play when one is has a identified how to solve the problem and requires a program that embodies the solution. The creative perspective that is compared to art involves the mental capabilities and ideas that one can obtain in terms of understanding symbols, strictures, semantics, and how they interrelate to come up with the best program or algorithm to solve the problem.
