Police Patrol And Community Policing
Community policing involves the assignment of specifically selected officers to familiarize and stay close with the members of a community. The idea of community policing and police patrol is criticized as it leads to the isolation of police officers, after the normal livelihoods through the involvement of the civilians, the lack of professionalism from the police officers and gives the notion that the police force is not enough to deal with community issues.
Community policing and police patrol involve sending the police officers to different areas in the community to get personally involved in the activities of the members. The police are isolated in the specific isolated area to get involves with the members of the community through the creation of interpersonal relationships. The police are separated from their preferred community areas and people such as fellow polices officers. This creation and development of the interpersonal relationship is not healthy in the case the police officers know a community member personally and must arrest them for wrongdoing.
When police officers are directly and personally involved with the community, there is the loss of professionalism which comes along with isolation. The lack of professionalism from theses police officers is attributed to the lack of respect associated with increased interaction of police with community members. The perspective of the police has changed over the years and in the current generation, the police officers face the risks of being hurt and in the worst case being murdered. The interpersonal relationship between the community members results in the disrespect of the police officers. The police officers lack support from the community. The lack of support increases the inactivity and apathy of the polices officers among themselves. The isolation evokes negative feelings among the police officers.
Communities without crimes benefit the most from community policing and police patrol. In some communities, the criminal cases occur frequently and the crimes cannot be overlooked without involving the police to handle the cases. In other cases, community policing can be used for personal gains by persons and officers selected in a specific area. In another view, the community members will engage in criminal activities with the understanding there will not many consequences through community policing.
The police officers are treated badly by most people; this because the police officer becomes more involved in the daily lives of the community members through patrol and community policing. The involvement of the police in the community affects the normal peaceful cohesion of people as they feel they are being watched and monitored. This results in malicious reactions to the police.
Community policing involves the integration of police services with regular civilians in a community. Community policing requires police officers to work closely and dependently on the efforts of the community members. The idea has been viewed to be attributed to the ineffectiveness and inability of the police force to perform their duties. The critics associated the police system to be under-equipped and under-utilized and therefore; unable to deal with the crimes of the community and must seek help from the community members.
In the current situation of community policing and police patrol, there is a problem. The community and patrol policing are an issue in the protection of the community members. The idea is not well supported by the community and in this sense, the police officers are isolated and not engage by the community they are supposed to protect.
