Organizational Needs
As the business world dives deeper into technology approaches, healthcare settings are also looking to meet their organizational needs through EHR systems. EHR vendors as well have proved to work hand in hand with the healthcare settings to help capture their user specifications hence aligning the system to the goals and objectives of their clients. For an outpatient pediatric clinic, there is a need to acquire an EHR system that supports the workflow of the establishment as it works towards meeting the needs of the children. There is a need for the vendor to first understand the needs of the healthcare setting to prioritize decision-making within the clinical content in the EHR hence improving service delivery and business goals.
An outpatient clinic that specializes in pediatrics only will need an EHR system that is more focused on predictable short-term care. Such an organization will need an HER system that will positively impact patients, management and staff (DeNisco, 2019). Making the workflow of the pediatrics clinic more efficient through the selected EHR is another need for the organization. Like most acquisitions, an EHR should improve the effectiveness of healthcare operations and increase patient satisfaction. EHR vendors can support the organization by working together with the clinicians; IT support teams and leadership to capture the desired needs (McGonigle, 2015). 24/7 support is another thing that organizations should consider when choosing their vendor. Making sure that the system aligns with the roles and goals of the organization, mission and vision, as well as processes, is the top priority for vendors when designing an EHR system.
The organizational needs are then used for decision making to establish user specifications. A three-tier governance model is necessary for the vendor to design a successful EHR project. The organizational needs are then broken down into high-level, mid-level, and detailed decisions (Davis, 2013). These tiers inform user specifications based on their impacts on the patients. For example, high-level decisions inform on what is to be done and by who; mid-level decisions define how the action will be done while detailed decisions depict the design of the action to be taken. These tiers hold the intricate details of user specifications, which are usually manipulated to fit the organizational needs.
Types of clinical content offered by HER vendors include forms, documents, and checklists that could be used by the professionals at the outpatient pediatrics clinic (Sterling, 2011). These types of content support a variety of actions that the nurses and specialists could use to draw conclusions and perform further actions. Moreover, the clinical content for the pediatrics clinic will focus on documentation for children’s visits making the data narrowed down to a specific area of study. Pre-authored clinical content provided by EHR vendors provides a standardized method of making decisions. This is because the content is interoperable; hence information exchange and care coordination are more efficient (Collins et al., 2013). Workflow is then improved and customer satisfaction improves.
In conclusion, EHR vendors can benefit the functions of an outpatient pediatrics clinic by considering their organizational needs. These needs are meant to advise on user needs which are reflected in the type of EHR clinical content offered. Choosing the right vendor can be a time consuming and complex process but once the right vendor is acquired, the healthcare setting is likely to enjoy the benefits of improved workflow and satisfied customers.
