Applied Learning Activity: Essay- Gender Based Stereotypes, Prejudice, Discrimination Looking Ahead: See Week 5 ALA for a pre-assignment where you will be engaging in three
random acts of kindness.
Before the Assignment:
Gender stereotypes are a social construct that exists in diverse cultural groups, settings, and spaces and are shaped by both biology and culture. Gender prejudice exists as well, and both gender prejudice and stereotypes are not only harmful for women but may also be unhealthy for men. In fact, organizations and governments that have a balance of women in leadership roles are often more successful as they have a broader view of the needs of employees, customers and/or constituents (Badal, 2014). However, women constitute only 24% of the US Gender stereotypes are made up by society and can be found in many different groups, places, and situations. They are shaped by both biology and culture. There is also bias based on a person’s gender, and both bias and stereotypes are bad for women and may also be bad for men. In fact, organizations and governments with a good mix of men and women in leadership positions are often more successful because they can see the needs of their employees, customers, and/or constituents from a wider perspective (Badal, 2014). But only 24% of people in the US are women.

congress (this is far less than in many other countries) and account for less than 8% of CEOs in Fortune 500 countries. These numbers are even more disparate for women of color. In light of this, the state of California passed legislation in 2018 requiring all corporations to have at least one-two women (depending on the size of the corporation) seated on a business’s corporate board by 2021( Women on Boards).
This week you have two choices for your assignment.
● You may consider an area in which gender stereotypes, gender prejudice, and/or gender discrimination occur (examples include in the workplace, home, child rearing, and/or education).
Or
● You may choose a particular gender stereotype or prejudice issue (examples include women in poverty, violence against women, men who stay home and raise their children, social power, social roles) that is specific to another culture and/or country.

Find at minimum TWO credible sources on a gender-based issue in an area of social
psychology (see Chapters 5 and 9 of your textbook). You can find credible sources in peer reviewed articles, legislative materials, state initiatives, or specific organizations that are focused on gender-based initiatives, such as the WHO, IMF, or United Way.
Assignment:
1. Present from a social psychological perspective the gender stereotype, gender prejudice, and/or gender discrimination issue on which you chose to focus.
● Assignment help – Discuss what the gender-based issue is in the context of social psychology and in light of the research and/or credible sources you found that illuminate the issue.
Describe how biology and culture play a role in the gender-based issue on which you chose to focus.
Explain what can be done to change or mitigate the gender-based issue.

● Begin with an introductory paragraph that includes a clear thesis statement. Be sure that you are writing one cohesive essay.
● End the paper with a concluding paragraph that restates your thesis.
● Cite THREE sources. This must include the textbook and both credible sources that

found. When in doubt, cite. It is better to over cite than to under cite.
● Explain- do not simply summarize- the social psychology concepts. Use your own words
and paraphrase throughout your essay.
● Do not use “quoted material” unless the author’s original words are critical to understanding the point (i.e., MLK- “I have a dream.”). Otherwise, all information should
be paraphrased.
● Define research terms and give real world examples where appropriate.
