Assignment help – Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of computers in the medical office for both: 1). Practice Management Systems and 2). Electronic Health Records
Medical facilities and offices have adopted technology in running day to day affairs but the technologies have both advantages and disadvantages. In this case, the health offices have adopted Electronic Health Records (EHR) and Practice Management Systems (PMS) to enhance efficiency in their operations. Electronic Health Records and Practice Management Systems have both advantages and disadvantages that are experienced in the course of the practice.
Practice Management Systems
Practice management systems have advantages and disadvantages experienced in the course of practicing medicine. First, PMS enables medical practitioners to access patient records. In this case, one can navigate through the patient files thus enabling them to give patients personalized care (De Waal and Kourtit, 2013, p. 448). Consequently, the system enhances patient communication in terms of appointment reminders and confirmation. On the other hand, PMS puts the health data and record security is at risk at the expense of the patient. The data is vulnerable to the point of landing on the wrong hands and can be misused at the expense of the patients.
Electronic Health Records
Electronic Health Records have advantages and disadvantages that affect both patients and medical practitioners. To start with, the EHR is easier to record-making effective in entering the patient details and storing it for future reference (Menachemi and Collum, 2011). Additionally, the patient has better access to their medical records at any place and time. The platform provides patient portals such that patient can access medical information as long as they have an internet connection. On the other hand, using EHR raises chances of violation of the HIPAA. The HIPAA enhances the security and confidentiality of patient information and any breach can lead to fines of about $100 to $ 1.5 million.
Conclusion
Adopting technology in the health offices have advantages and disadvantages that are experienced by both the medical practitioners and the patient. EHR and PMS have been created for a common good in the medical field but their implementation raises disadvantages. The advantages need to be maintained and enhance while countering the disadvantages.
