Please read the materials assigned for the week and answer the following questions. Length is flexible, as long as the work that goes into your answer is sincere and shows close familiarity with the assigned material. Please make sure you attribute: that is, identify the author or material you are referring to. No formal citations needed.

1. Two things you learned (This could be empirical or a bigger thematic/conceptual/theoretical point. You may write one sentence for each, but it should be more than a few words!)

2. An argument or a theme in one of the assignments

3. Any key terms/concepts?

4. A takeaway/further thoughts/a question/critiques, etc

The theme of the assignment is focused on street demonstration. The article defines street demonstration and how it can be differentiated from other protests such as riots and hooliganism. The paper also investigates participation in the demonstration. Street demonstration refers to airing out political opinions, ideas, and communication aimed at the public, the media, and the authority. Individual participation in demonstrations comes from the interaction between the individual and the players, such as the movement organizations and parties. The article’s key concepts involve the dynamics towards participation in demonstrations that involve demand supply and mobilization.
Demand refers to the likelihood of a particular society to participate in a demonstration over a specific issue. On the other hand, supply refers to the social movements or organizations preparing the demonstration for individuals to participate. Mobilization links demand and supply, which are the organization’s techniques and mechanisms to build a mobilizing structure. There are both dynamics in demand and supply, mostly the driving force or issues towards the demonstration. Some of the dynamics in demand include identification, grievances, and emotions. One of the things learned is that there are various types of protest, street demonstration being one. Another learned thing is that there has to be demand, supply, and mobilization for a demonstration. These dynamics bring together the actors towards the demonstration.
A takeaway point is that demonstrations take place on short notice, making it hard to plan for well-thought studies on the demonstration. Many learned concepts about protest participation come from analyzing the studies of the protest events and studies of protest participants.
