I believe that Luther and his contemporary reformers impact the religious society of the Church because of the he reformed the Church. He was constantly thinking that no amount of charitable good works, prayers, or religious ceremonies would please God and it drove him crazy. When he was lecturing at St. Paul, Luther came up with the solution of penance. Penance provided a way to confess sins and receive absolution for them. He now understood that you can’t earn freedom, but he needed to act upon it himself.
