The importance of Information Technology (IT) is felt in all realms of business activities. A lot has been achieved making the appropriation of IT possible by a majority of businesses. One of the most vital activities for the successful development of new technology-based services is the identification of opportunities. Managers play a crucial role in identifying such opportunities. Identifying appropriate IT opportunities for a manager entails identifying present loopholes, current trends in IT and opportunities to enhance and update software and systems.
In fulfilling his role of identifying suitable IT opportunities, a manager can start by identifying present loopholes in the organization. It is not advisable to go shopping without knowing what to purchase. As such, no technology should be implemented prior to identifying the needs. The initial thing that needs to be done is to identify what exactly is not working in the organization. The next thing to do is to check why it is not working, whether it is because of lack of talent, less allocation of resource, outdated technology, etc (Reynolds, 2015). It is until then can a technology opportunity be purchased.
The manager’s role also entails identifying current trends in technology. Current trends are enhancing and presenting new functions in business, and still, other much-anticipated technology is coming on the scene. Advancements in IT systems pertain to what the industry is leaning toward or disregarding now (Kabanda, 2019). IT is advancing so quickly that new developments are rapidly substituting current projections. Being able to take advantage of current trends enables a business to maximize on technology.
Identifying and acting on opportunities to enhance and update software and systems is an important initiative as well. A majority of malware attacks that are more harmful take advantage of susceptibilities of software in famous applications such as operating systems and browsers (Turban, Pollard & Wood, 2018). These are large programs that need constant updates to remain secure and stable. Leveraging the use of these updates will make the user experience better enabling the company to get the most from the technology.
